what an incredibly fun watch. despite what many reviewers on here and elsewhere are saying (*cough* MEN), it's not necessarily derivative and it doesn't try to be the "girl power" version of anything, it just delivers a story that's feminine, bawdy, witty, sweet, and inclusive all at once.

so much of what this movie tries to pass off (in the first half) as Romance was downright uncomfortable for me to watch as a woman. it is more than evident that a bunch of men wrote this screenplay. greasy, red faced, gin dick bradley cooper croaking "can i touch your nose?" is an image i'm going to have to try very hard to shake. this also felt like a masturbatory, self indulgent, 2 hours+ "for your consideration" best actor…

Watching this again, i just keep thinking about something Maggie Gyllenhaal said when i saw her speak at TIFF - which is that this movie is an expression of something purely feminine that we don't see very often depicted onscreen. She said that it explores the consequences of starving a brilliant and vibrant woman’s mind in a very Virginia Woolf-esque way. And those consequences, as you'll see, really are dire. Also can I just say - that final scene... OOF. Hit me like a ton of bricks.
