This was the cinematic equivalent of dry toast. Soulless and embarrassing.
Watching this again, i just keep thinking about something Maggie Gyllenhaal said when i saw her speak at TIFF - which is that this movie is an expression of something purely feminine that we don't see very often depicted onscreen. It explores the consequences of starving a brilliant and vibrant woman’s mind in a very Virginia Woolf-esque way. And those consequences, as you'll see, really are dire. Also can I just say - that final scene... OOF. Hit me like a ton of bricks.
