Middle part is a little slow, it is not about much really, a very simple theatre play premise with quite a bit of circus around it, an absurdist take on a western. This mix of weird characters, sarcastic motives, great music, good acting and direction, it entertains for the most part, and comes together real well in the end. Elevated by commitment. B+
No joke: This movie has whole scenes of the most fantastic apocalyptic warfare I have ever seen. Direction, music, acting are all above average. There was serious talent involved in this production. As long as a mix of broadway theatre, identity crisis, masochistic humor, dreamlike storyflow and satire seems somewhat interesting to you you should be generally entertained here.
I did not like the original anime that much. It is very creative and interesting, but does not work as a movie and feels like a good pilot to a 1 or 2 season show. It never seemed as deep to me as similar stories, mainly because of the lack of agency in the characters and the small plot.
