Starts out as what is ostensibly a revenge thriller, utilizing Cage's recent image as an actor who stars exclusively in direct-to-DVD schlock to create that impression. Sarnoski does this deliberately in order to set the bar low in terms of audience expectations, so that when the film does eventually become more than a John Wick style revenge thriller, the effect seems more profound than it actually is.
