  I found the central conflict unconvincing and a bit repetitive. The eventual escalations of the plot are easier to accept if these two characters are viewed more as symbols of the kind of pointless infighting that McDonagh suggests tore the country apart at the seams (you’ve heard of cutting off the nose to spite the face…well now here’s this).
