The action lacks the satisfying crunch of pre-cgi films but it's otherwise very coherently staged and often trying fun things, such as the deep focus of the parallel fight lines along the Sicilian rooftops, or flipping the lighthouse attack to a bird's eye view. I found this so repellant that obviously the film is doing something right. The scene in the middle when Alien x-rays their minds on the park bench was great. The rest of it? Some kind of satire about white entitlement and the elision of black life, but when the characters are so transparently false, it doesn't have any teeth.

Pretty clear this is what Charlie Hunnam and Robert Pattinson were looking for in Darkest Peru.

The pro-immigrant message is so welcome in the current environment that it's hard to get too peeved at this film's handwavey attitude toward colonialism or the sometimes awkward flirty humor.

It models storybook modes of storytelling (like the family dollhouse) but never presses too hard on them.
