Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story 1987
As someone who, as a child, made movies with dolls in this same fashion I feel seen. Obviously, this is far more ambitious and realized than whatever I was trying to do with dolls and my parent’s camcorder.
This is truly a testament to what you can accomplish with limited resources if the vision is there.

The Color Purple 2023
It is astounding how every single emotional beat in the story is fumbled. As someone who adores the original 1985 adaptation, it was consistently frustrating to watch all the moments that still give me goosebumps when I watch Spielberg’s film now rendered as hollow anti-climaxes.
Whether it’s over-explained, under-played, or over-acted, there is always some creative misstep there to undermine the most impactful and memorable events. Moments that are definitive to the legacy of this story are either brushed-through or…

There are two movies here: a boring, hollow romantic fantasy drama and the most insane musical spectacle ever put to film.
The plot is thinner than the paper the script was printed on. Gene Kelly is the only actor here who doesn’t deliver a flat performance. The songs for the most part don’t serve the story, but there’s also barely a story anyway so… songwriters innocent, I guess?
