i can't think of this film without thinking of early morning light. i know the film's opening sequence takes place in the early morning, but this entire film has the eerie mood of looking out into the light blue and purple sky of the early hours.
this film is almost too deep for it's own good, but it comes across as introspective rather than pretentious. this film actually reminds me of mulholland drive (2001), but i will say mulholland drive's story is a little more complex in a way that shows a more mature storyteller. but– this is a coming of age story, so this being a little less sophisticated does makes sense for it's story.
really great performance from jake gyllenhaal. we can excuse a little nepotism because he really is talented :)
