The Worst Person in the World

The Worst Person in the World ★★★★½

Tiff 2021 #2

The Worst Person in the World is more along the lines of I'm the Worst in the World at Being a Person something I'm sure everyone has felt at one point or another.

What I really loved about Trier's approach to this is that it feels like an epic within the intimate character study genre. The scope of what happens within the film is so broad yet it's focus is so direct on it's character(s).

What helps him pull this grand feat off is the twelve chapter format that not only keeps the story moving, but manages to continually introduce fresh perspectives and moments without feeling detached from it's whole. Add in some super creative filmaking techniques for good measure as well (a certain drug induced segment was unexpected but entirely appreciated).

My only small issue is that the last bit of the film switches to a certain tone and I think comits to it for a bit too long. It produces some of the best scenes in the film for sure, but I also think it could have been trimmed down as to not stall the momentum too much.

In the end though it is one of the freshest approaches to the genre that I have seen in a while and I cant wait to watch it again.

Two for two now on Tiff bangers, 2021 films are really heating up🔥🔥🔥
