Mark Cunliffe’s review published on Letterboxd:
I was about to say this is the most intelligent and uplifting, heartfelt movie to come out of America for some time.
And then I remembered that it's actually a Canadian/Irish/Film 4 UK production - which explains why it's y'know, actually good. Intelligent, heartfelt and uplifting are things modern day Hollywood struggle with, opting instead for dumb, sappy and sentimental.
Seriously though, this is a remarkable film blessed by incredible performances from Brie Larson and seven-year-old Jacob Tremblay. I didn't expect a film about being held captive to be so utterly life-affirming.
