    We rag on Shawn Levy for propping up his latest directorial effort on the vacant charisma of Ryan Reynolds and Taika Waititi, sure. But when this early in your career you get to play around in the comedic sandbox with such talents as Steve Martin, Kevin Kline, and Jean Reno, can you really be blamed for what follows? It’s all downhill from here.

    I hadn’t seen E.T. since the 20th anniversary re-release, which was so terrifying that I used twizzlers to cover my eyes (my first moviegoing memory). Although not really scary, the way Spielberg frames the head scientist throughout the first half of the movie (all crotch and ass) is ominous.

    And for a film with no fat at all, E.T. himself is low key giving cured meat, which I guess makes sense given how he’s treated.

Only it’s imaginary; Sam isn’t actually filming his family’s dissolution in real time, but that’s maybe how he wants to remember it—pieces of film he can edit back together in his mind, playing over and…
