    I wasn’t expecting to like this film quite so much. Honestly, I think it works because they were willing to make the movie about the news story—so many of these types of films misdirect our attention toward the people on the teams, but Spotlight trusts the unraveling tale of the Catholic church to carry the movie. I’m sure it’s partially because of the severity of the story (ie. who wouldn’t care about the systemic abuse of children perpetrated by one of the most powerful religious organizations in the world), but plenty of lesser movies could share a similar scope if they trusted their audience to take it seriously.
