as a lifelong fan of pro wrestling this already great film probably hits even harder for me than most people. i remember watching it when i was younger and (probably due to my age) not loving it as much, but man did i find this rewatch impactful. this setting works perfectly for the subject of an ageing performer, and it's wonderful to see it explored in such a raw and unfiltered fashion. you can tell the team behind this movie…

the touch of a master director is instantly identifiable here, especially in the way the film seamlessly shifts through peculiar situations like forgotten memories. in terms of anderson's filmography, it's perhaps most reminiscent of inherent vice, punch drunk love, or boogie nights, at least in terms of style. the scene-stealing side characters, beautiful cinematography, pitch-perfect soundtrack selection, and massively impressive debut performances by alana & cooper are only some of the highlights in what is a sharply bittersweet movie.

"captivating" is an understatement and "glued to the screen from start to finish" might be an overused expression but it's also the only accurate one to describe my experience with dog day afternoon. i've always loved movies that largely take place in one location and this is one of the best ever. and yeah, saying "pacino is unreal in this" is as redundant as possible at this point but man, pacino is unreal in this.

    "anyone can tilt."

i haven't even watched that much of paul schrader's work but this is easily identifiable as a product of his brain (the narration and focus on a broken, lonely man kind of gives it away, i guess). even if i don't completely love the final product, i really respect what the film is going for. there are some peculiar technical choices which work rather well, specifically the use of VR lenses in certain intense scenes and the…

    october horror watch.
    film #13

while it's perhaps an even better watch during christmas time than october, black christmas certainly lives up to its hype as one of the OG slasher movies. a number of tropes present in many later films are present here and it's a delight to see it executed so well so early. the influence this movie had on carpenter's halloween is really noticeable so it's only right i finally watched one of the inspirations for my all-time favorite horror. the final 30 minutes are incredibly intense and the conclusion is perfect. i don't want to hear a telephone ringing ever again.

born, perhaps, of the uniquely human understanding that things will not.

the more you think about it and look at the film through a new perspective, the sadder it all becomes... a charlie kaufman film indeed.

the last 20 minutes really threw me for a loop until i realised what was going on. my interpretation will probably change with rewatches but right now i see it as a portrayal of…
