Annette ★★

like Holy Motors, the only other film i’ve seen from Leos Carax, i had a very ambiguous emotional reaction to this film. only difference is despite my initially negative thoughts about Holy Motors, there is a mysteriousness in its abstract narrative that makes me want to revisit it multiple times and absorb myself in its world. i felt the opposite way towards Annette. i grew impatient with its runtime, with the simultaneously creative and monotonous songwriting, with Adam Driver hamming it up. i can appreciate how strange and limit-testing it is, and i think i get why a lot of people love this, but i really can’t get into it.
