Dial M for Murder

Dial M for Murder ★★★★★

An exquisitely plotted murder thriller from the master. Casting Grace Kelly was a stroke of genius. Kelly’s angelic features rendered in three dimensions is a breathtaking sight to behold. The use of 3D is never overtly flashy, rather Hitchcock utilises the technology to create the illusion that you’re in the room, voyeuristically watching events unfold. Whilst Hitchcock experiments with new filmmaking ideas, here and in Rope, it doesn’t feel cheap or excessively gimmicky. It's all in service of the film and about strengthening that magical emotional bond between cinema and viewers. Hitchcock will utilise every tool within his arsenal to ensure the audience experience the maximum amount of suspense. The result is one of the best uses of 3D in cinema that I’ve seen, in a perfectly crafted film that the classic television series Columbo certainly owes a debt of gratitude.
