Director Chris’s review published on Letterboxd:
I’ll be honest…going into this movie i was scared. Seeing the rotten tomatoes scores, the criticizes i’m hearing all over the internet. I wasn’t sure if this was going to be as good as i hoped it was. And boy was i wrong…
Eternals is a beautiful film that captures the importance of not only what it means to be a super hero, but to be a family.
I thought everyone for the post part did an excellent job here. My three favorites were Kingo, Gilgamesh, and Makkari. Kingo is easily the standout here, he is so funny in each and every way. Gilgamesh was a good surprise as well, i didn’t expect to love him as much as i did. Also i’m not seeing enough talk about this, but Makkari’s VFX with her running are better than any other i’ve ever seen in a film, also her character is amazing as well.
I mean no shit, but the visuals here were stunning. Using real world surroundings was a great idea and Chole Zhao used the idea fantastically.
I do have one slight issue though…while i feel you could’ve cut out some stuff towards the end, or just shaped it up a bit better, i feel this film is trying to do so much to put into 2 hours and 30 minutes. I feel most of this story needed to be explored in the second film, or at least in their next appearance in the mcu (i wonder when they’ll be) But they need to cover 7,000 years worth of story, which Chole Zhao tried her best to do.
In conclusion, i really enjoyed this film, im not sure where it goes on my mcu ranking just yet, but i know it’ll be fairly high!
