The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 ★★★½

I applaud this movie for avoiding the obvious route. I'm sure it was tempting to just lift the Friday the 13th formula, add a dash of Leatherface, and call it a day - the movie makes itself.

How fortunate we are to live in a world where the team behind Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 decided to go absolutely nuts, a la Gremlins 2. ("You're telling me you want Dennis Hopper running around underground catacombs, dual wielding chainsaws, and chainsaw-dueling Leatherface on top of the Sawyer family dinner table? It's great, I love it, it's in the movie.")

Is it as good, as unsettling, as grimy as the original? No, but it rides a nice line between comedy and horror with some delightfully macabre sequences (my favorite highlight being our heroine being forced to wear the face of her coworker and dance with a love-struck Leatherface, because evidently I'm a suck fuck). The movie remains firmly rooted in horror while remaining fun and keeping a sense of humor, which is no small feat.

A rousing good time, definitely recommended.
