This wild little movie is absolutely Hong Kong’s answer to “Rosemary’s Baby” and it’s as insane as you think it is, but it takes a while to get going.

The first half of this movie feels like Yimou’s “Raise the Red Lantern”, and plays more like an imperial love story than a goofy monster movie. However, exactly 48 minutes into this thing it goes off the rails in all the best ways and becomes the movie you were hoping it was going to be.

In fact, the second half of the movie almost feels like an entirely new film has started, because tonally it’s so different. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but I can see how some people would be put off by that.

Anthony Wong shows up late in the game as a super exorcist and does his able best to fuck shit up.
