Captain America: The First Avenger

Captain America: The First Avenger ★★★★

Maybe I had been in a grumpy mood, but the first time I saw this flick it didn't really work for me. I love, love, LOVED the first half chronicling Steve Rogers transformation from a good-hearted weakling into a super soldier, but thought things dried up real quick once Captain America entered the war zone and launched a seemingly never-ending series of scenes with bullets and laser beams flying as he deflected them with his shield.
Some of this repetitiveness is still grating upon a second viewing but whatever reason I found it a lot more enjoyable the second time around.
The cast is excellent, the look and period style is charming as hell, and the musical score harkens back to a lost era and tone that we don't see very often in movies today.
I find it a bit hard to take the Red Skull serious as a villain even with the great Hugo Weaving at the helm and I'm concerned about Steve Rogers being able to hold his own on a movie devoid of the period setting charm, but this second viewing brightened my prospects for Captain America on screen and I look forward to seeing what they do with him next.
