griffith uses alchemy to create a film that feels like waves rolling onto shore, slowly cycling in the same direction (forwards).
the waves briefly halt in order to deliver an ending with such emotional force that it will never stop reverberating into cinema's future.
with films like this being made in 1910, the potential of cinema remains far from known.
