  • Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

    Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse 2023

★★★★ Watched by Trace Sauveur 03 Jun 2023

Excellent, a total lightning storm of impossibly expressive light and sound and color and image used to tell a meta-narrative deconstructing the idea of the hero’s journey and narrative structure, interrogating franchise tropes by way of using one of the biggest ones of the Spider-Man franchise as an emotional crutch for Miles’ story which asks fundamental questions about who gets to be a hero and how. So genuinely meditative and adventurous in form and narrative. Feels like it shouldn’t exist.

i dont like giving fives. and spiderman movies are a whole other genre for me. don’t know how i feel about the ending . but wowwww , so much care was put into this. miguel o’hara arc , the dimension twist , cant wait to see if we break canon or not (we will). would be really awesome to see this end tragically in the next film. i wanna make a spiderman 2099 film w me as miguel o hará , on some super dark vibes.

i liked when he did the thing from the video game(s). i guess there are probably worse colorful “i got the reference!” light-shows to put your tiny-brained idiot in front of in this day and age, and this one hits its credits at 83 minutes. instant jail for the music supervisor, however. like c'mon. there is a wealth of fun music across those games and you're going to make half of it your mom's generic 80s hits spotify playlist instead? at least jack black came to cook because no one else did.

I have thought about this movie nearly every day since my initial viewing last month. It was not as top-to-bottom scintillating as the trailer made it out to be, and while it was still incredibly impressive, perhaps for that reason it did leave me a bit cold initially. It failed to provide that cumulative cinematic high that PTA's other films regularly give me. Nonetheless, I began to think about it pretty regularly and kind of mythologized it in my head.…

2 hours of nonstop hits. I'm very often so enthralled by a movie that I can't look away but I saw this with a friend who's barely ever had that, and he was completely captivated here. We usually whisper and joke through all the big Hollywood movies we've seen recently, but during Blackberry the only words I heard from my buddy were "This is the best. This is my favorite." Amazing show-stopping performances from the whole cast. Shot so brilliantly and written in a way that left be bruised from gut-punch after gut-punch. Go see this!!!!

Director Matt Johnson did a Q&A at IFC after—which spilled out to him just hanging out on 6th Ave—that clarified a lot of things I felt watching this movie. None of these quotes are literally accurate (do you think I'm the kind of guy who brings a notebook to movies?) but they are vibrationally accurate, like the film.

On copyright: "I specifically tried to violate as many people's copyright as possible. It sucks when you're watching a movie and they're…
