A rollicking, riotous, and relentless quasi-DTV woman-led b-movie actioner crammed to the gills with near-non-stop dynamic fight choreography, dozens of defeated henchmen, and enough "barbaric yawps" to make Walt Whitman blush, The Princess is a shockingly entertaining little genre film that inverts the "princess in the tower" motif to great effect, aided immeasurably by star Joey King's charisma and commitment.

Wow, I'm new to this whole Joey King thing, but golly gee, long live the King. I’m all-in on her being the girl Scott Adkins if she wants to keep making these streaming bone-crunching action flicks.

    Plus, Olga Kurylenko.

    ★★★★

Solid new Pinhead actor stuns with plenty of screen time in Hellraiser: Judgment, an outstanding capper to the Hellraiser decology that offers a Se7en-like serial killer procedural enmeshed with dark biblical themes, shocking moments, and plenty of well-executed signature gore, while broadly expanding the mythology in a fun and tantalizing way. Might be my favorite.

Rating the action-romance-samurai-western-comedy classic Road House anything less than 4 stars is not only a bad opinion but is also a mathematical fallacy, and here’s why: Swayze gets automatic 1 star for any project he’s in, period, end of story; Sam Elliott, samesies; nude Kelly Lynch = 1 star; ripping out a dude’s throat, also automatic 1 star; that’s 4 stars, baby. Fight me.

    Ticket to Paradise

    ★★★½

Imminently charming, beautifully photographed, and as polished as you might expect given the A-list leads, Ticket to Paradise has a stellar setting, is competently performed by a lovely cast that includes Billie Lourd channeling her mother in one of her more prominent roles, and is surprisingly heartfelt, breezy, and funny, resulting in all-in-all a satisfying though predictable comfort watch.

    Top Gun: Maverick

    ★★★

Less a proper movie than it is a nostalgic two-hour commercial for the military industrial complex wrapped up in a vanity project to end all vanity projects, Top Gun: Maverick thrills in spots and is overall entertaining but suffers from terrible writing jammed with clunky exposition and mostly unearned emotional beats.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

    ★★

Lacking thematic depth, sorely in need of narrative focus, and pathetically over-reliant on knowing by heart the plot points of a logically vacant Disney+ TV series, Doctor Strange 2 is by no means outrightly bad but could have been so much better, by leaning even more heavily into the promised horror elements and by amping up the general weirdness, occult aspects, and goddamn sorcery, given it is a Dr. Strange movie, for chrissake.

The original Dr. Strange was the first…
