Jojo Rabbit

Jojo Rabbit ★★★½

Based on Christine Leunens' novel Caging Skies (2008), Taika Waititi’s film adaption manages to be a bit more than the “Hilter is a little boy’s imaginary friend” gimmick at the core of its advertisement campaign by injecting some of its source’s shockingly bleak drama into the whimsical world of the titular Jojo Rabbit (2019).

Superb performances by the rookie Roman Griffin Davis and the seasoned Scarlett Johansson help ease the film’s constant back-and-forth from humorous gags to heartbreaking drama, but ultimately I am left waiting more darkness and less Rebel Wilson.
