still need some time to think about this one, but it was FASCINATING. The idea that alma and elisabet are somewhat alike in appearance and position as wives (or potential wife) and mothers (or potential mother) but completely different in terms of what satisfies them is not all that revolutionary, but the way the tension between them bubbles and stirs definitely is. Alma is jealous, and Elisabet, who can't speak to express herself, is the perfect target of jealously. Alma can easily melt herself into the image of a silent, glamourous woman, and Elisabet has no way of stopping her. The desired ability to find a new persona is central to the film, and the envy of someone a person wants to be.
the scene where elisabet and alma's faces are half lit is my favorite oh my god. thank you halle for the recommendation <333
