Number 85 out of 388 in my "Great Movie" binge.
I had originally planned on saving "Jaws" for the Fourth of July weekend, but...screw it! It's summertime when anytime is good to watch this classic!
Let me share with you a significant scene in the movie (while going light on spoilers for the poor souls that had yet to see this). At the climax of the story, the great white shark jumps onto the boat. It can't be ignored how fake this shark looks. When we get the wide shot of the beast hopping on, I laugh as I can easily imagine many viewers doing as well. Not a minute later, I'm back to gasping while on the edge of my seat for the rest of this finale which is one of my top ten personal movie finales ever. That is movie magic, kids! The magic of editing, the magic of all artists involved!
Speaking of editing, I can't help having this thought whenever I watch this movie. There's that part when a guy on a rowboat gets attacked by the shark. Before he is killed, there's an cutaway shot of three tanning young ladies witnessing the scene. This edit makes me wonder if the unlucky bastard ever got laid in his lifetime.
