Not the patient zero for all the shit I can’t stand in modern sci fi movies but does feel like a tipping point for this annoying sort of "ending EXPLAINED" YouTube writing

“Finally, some HARD SCIENCE FICTION” - someone watching a movie where a bunch of military personnel explain how China is too calculating and competitive to receive the aliens’ message about true love

One more movie evoking a seemingly endless expanse of space and time that still can’t conceive…

my bet is that this is a pretty good preview of the next few years of Biden-era pop culture: bloodless, dollhouse depictions of revolt and imprisonment, politics held at arms' length, uncritical odes to ancient media institutions, etc

    fake covers looked great!

Charming to remember a time when middlebrow Oscar bait could feel like a real target?

Since those movies don't get made as much now, I've been seeing more nostalgia for them (my bet is we're probably a few months away from people trying to critically rehabilitate The Majestic or Captain Corelli’s Mandolin or something.) Most of the criticism of Malm’s original book was that he was asking why the climate movement doesn’t currently have an appetite for ecoterrorism, while glossing over the decades of increased policing of North American activist movements leading up to our present moment. I read it while I was still facing criminal charges related to the type of action he’s advocating for (charges got dropped 😎🚞❌🛤❌😎 fwiw) and remember feeling annoyed by him describing the problem as a lack of…

never watched this guy's Youtube so I don't have any positive or negative points of comparison there, but the way his eyes widen with glee the "crazier" his man-on-the-street interviews get sums up what's so insufferable about these Louis Theroux comedian ethnographer guys. Would maybe be more compelling if 50% of this wasn’t dedicated to shining a light on some of the most well-documented people and events in recent memory, but good job on letting people "hang themselves with their own rope" I guess. felt like a pitch for a 2020s revamp of the Daily Show, down to its weirdly centrist slant
