this had some of the most beautiful moments ever in a film and was simultaneously so infuriating . . . so much of it was so great but so much of it was like if 2 men tried to write their own sally rooney novel in film form

What starts off as a fascinating, humorously-observed character portrait becomes a rather standard relationship drama. The Worst Person in the World is told in, as its opening title card promises, a prologue, twelve chapters, and an epilogue; the structure works well in pacing the long timeline of the film’s narrative, but it also makes it all too clear where it gets lost. AFI 2021: film #3

    “i always overdo it”

had high hopes for this and it held up for a while, especially in its humor, but i’m not really sure what i’m supposed to take away from it in the end. the protagonist starts out pretty fully formed but then the writing begins to disintegrate and chip away at her until she’s left a manic pixie shell of her former self, but maybe that’s what she was all along on paper…
