    The Tragedy of Macbeth


    German Expressionism and Shakespeare... I think this film was made specifically for me.
    It's shot on a soundstage so it feels like a play, the staging gets more surreal and contrasty as the story progresses.
    I'm not sure I agree textually with the Ross character's story arc (might need a reread), but I like it for the film, and Alex Hassell is perfect. Frances McDormand is such a powerful Lady Macbeth, it's almost surprising to see her go crazy.

    I think a big part of what I love about Wes Anderson, is his appreciation for all the crafts of film; the miniatures, costumes, sets, props, and lighting all get as much focus as the acting and cinematography. Unfortunatley, here, that focus actually got in the way of the film as a whole. I remember at one point, really just wanting to watch Mathieu Amalric's face, but the camera was sliding around like it was on ice. The anthology style…

    I get that I'm in the minority here, but I love this movie. Gabriel Byrne has to be in my top 5 cinematic Devil depictions. He's the perfect blend of campy sexy chaos (although I could do with more of the creepy intensity, but, this movie is more horror-light). And, I mean, the Governator is the Governator. Of course, Robin Tunney is almost too genuine as the not entirely helpless damsel in distress.
