I’m the last person on this app to finally see this, and I don’t have much of an excuse given how much I loved The Witch, so I guess I’ll just say: pretty great! Doesn’t quite reach the highs of his debut, but it reaffirms that Eggers is one of the most interesting new filmmakers to emerge from the last decade. His grasp on creating an immersive and evocative atmosphere is remarkable, as is his ability to craft such a tactile and tangible experience, evoking 1800s New England with a unique specificity and precision. Strange and claustrophobic in the best ways—a little Lovecraft here, a little Shining there, and a little Eraserhead too, plus some scatological humor for good measure. But it’s a unique Gothic vision first and foremost, rooted in the unknowable mystery of the ocean and the fog. Dafoe and Pattinson are unreal. Can’t wait to see The Northman (would’ve seen it opening weekend but I was on vacation).
