A film filled with symbols and meanings, and yet I think it might just not focus enough on its real characters, in order to pursue statements regarding the rich vs poor, caste systems, technology, capitalism, West Vs East, the Vietnam War and the general state of the world at the time

Satyajit Ray did name it a fable, though, so I'm not sure how much it can be criticised in that aspect then, and it now makes me think how well fables and metaphors can be handled in films; especially with regards to how characters are "used" and portrayed.

The storyline was perhaps made too unnecessarily complicated as it went on, but its heart was in the right place. Makoto Shinkai shows what is possible through the power of fantasy and imagination in movies (especially animation), and I thank him for that.

A really good and audacious film, but I also left with the feeling that it could've been better! I wish it, directly or subtly, explored the underlying reasons of the characters' circumstances more.

    Great ending, great sound.
"Do you understand your sin?" - with this line that it seems like it's putting some (most?) of the blame on the protagonists for their "sins", and I'm not sure that's ideal

Really powerful scene of a girl being slapped with money and being forced to act as a prostitute.
