All Quiet on the Western Front

All Quiet on the Western Front ★★★★★

Harrowing, brutal, honest, sad & powerful. Edward Berger’s All Quiet on the Western Front is one of the greatest and most realistic anti-war movies ever made. It’s Jarhead/1917 mixed together. The astonishing cinematography from James Friend is similar to Emmanuel Lubezki’s brilliant work in The Revenant. My goodness, what haunting and gorgeous images. The performances all-around are terrific performances especially Felix Kammerer. The sound design, setting and everything else including the score from Volker Bertelmann are all marvelous. This one made me tear up a lot and it’s another reminder why war is freaking hell. This is a special movie right here. Edward Berger directs the heck out of it. Netflix better campaign the crap out of it, it deserves as many Oscar nominations as possible especially best picture, cinematography, sound, score, etc. I’ve been wanting to watch the 1930 version and i’ll be sure to get to it very soon.
