Michael Vazquezβs review published on Letterboxd:
Even more impactful, powerful & sadder the second time around. This is one of the saddest films of all-time. God, I havenβt cried so hard this many times at a movie since Hachi π It truly is a moving picture and Felix Kammerer shouldβve easily been nominated (same with Albrecht Schuch). Heβs heart and soul of this movie. He carries it and gives one of the most heartbreaking performances in ages, I wouldnβt have said this the first time around despite his amazing performance but now watching it again he gave my favorite male performance of 2022. What a snub. But iβm so glad both the BAFTAs & Oscars felt the same way I did and iβm especially happy that they both recognized Volker Bertelmannβs tremendous score, that main theme is bonkers and is one of my favorite tracks from last year. Iβve listened to it a dozen times when I downloaded it from iTunes and into my iPod and after I heard it the first viewing.
I love Top Gun: Maverick to death, itβll remain to me as one of the greatest movies of all-time but watching this again, it just took over itβs place as my favorite movie of 2022. Itβs one of the greatest war movies ever and in general. I know itβs a longshot but nothing would make happier if this won Best Picture.
