Portrait of a Lady on Fire

Portrait of a Lady on Fire ★★★★½

Going through the movie I got really absorbed in it and witnessed all the events taking place, but I didn't really get a sense that it was leading somewhere. Reminded me of Call Me By Your Name (another fantastic movie), which also didn't lead anywhere and just ended in a sad note.
Getting up to the ending, from a technical standpoint the film is imaculate. The colours are beautiful and there are many shots that stick in your head. It's not really a spoiler, but the whole time Marianne is remembering this story, so you have many inserted shots that have huge significance if you pay attention to it.
The acting is also great here. The two main performances are so alive and the actresses say so much only through their expressions. That alone is worth the price of admission.
Then we get to the end and I admit that the last 10 minutes fucking broke me. It ends in such a perfect way, I am shocked. There are three scenes (you probably know which ones I am referring to) that bring the film in a full circle and I lost it. It almost brought me to the point of tears. It was a good movie before that, but the ending really made it for me. It's one of those that I wish all my friends watched it so we can have a discussion about it. It's such a magnificent effort and it may grow even more in the future.
