It's art literally rebelling against vapid consumerism, and the film mostly embraces the glorious camp that it is. It's barely a satire and more of a darkly comedic showcase of consumption—where everything collapses and self-consumes. At its best, it reminded me of the wickedly dark comedy of Kubrick's The Shining.

It's basically a 40s screwball comedy set to the backdrop of Fincher's The Game. The dialogue is hilarious, and McAdams and Bateman are at their funniest. One of its great joys is that the humor is sustained through its action climax—the last 20 minutes had me in stitches, and I don't think I was still reeling from the Frito-Lay line or that parking lot scene. This is all that I love about Shyamalan, with his idiosyncrasy turned up to 11; after another watch it might be my favorite of his films. It's utterly operatic and emotionally devastating.

This is an unbelievably accurate and gut-wrenching depiction of despair—an ever-deepening hole of waste and helplessness. The glimmers of salvation beyond the immanent frame of ecological destruction are the faintest imaginings, sustaining a deeply tortured ambivalence toward faith. Schrader's digital photography is affecting and so, so cold.

    This is a masterpiece.
