    I liked how the writer incorporated the basic themes of Macbeth into the story of one single family rather than different ones like in the original Shakespearean play. I think it's probably the first time I saw such an adaptation of Macbeth.

    The production value of this series is just amazing. Don't know how much money they spent but the sets and games would even put blockbuster biggies to shame. There's some solid, though predictable , writing showing various facets of human nature through different characters.

    Hard to believe that Aparna Sen made such a film back in '85. A film that was definitely well ahead of it's time. I can still imagine many Indians 'canceling' this film and Aparna Sen's conviction to tell this story back in 80s needs to be lauded.
    Also, this story could have been so wrongly portrayed in hands of some other (male) director but Aparna Sen's sensitive and mature direction and Rakhee Gulzar's mesmerising take as Paroma made it believable and heart-touching. This is groundbreaking filmmaking in every shape and form. LOVED IT.

    Hereby, I officially declare that coming-of-age films are my most favourite kind of films.
    I watched this film for Marlee Matlin whom I'd loved in her Oscar winning performance in Children of a Lesser God. She was just as amazing here too. The actors who played Ruby's brother and father were really good too.
    But it was Emilia Jones who shined throughout. Loved her so much. In some scenes, she looked like young Kate Winslet.
