Yeah so over the last 24 hours, my top 5 movies of all time, have all shifted places, so do take this with a grain of salt. but I think Your name might be my favorite movie of all time. That might change tomorrow, but right now, it is. It's definitely not the "best" movie ever made, but my favorite. There are flaws in this movie, for sure. I've seen the movie ten times now in under a year. I'm bound to find some flaws. No movie is perfect. But to me, this movie is really damn close.
After reviewing this movie so many times, I don't have much more to say about it. I watched it today in preparation for Weathering with you. And I'll take any excuse I can find to watch this movie. It's just so wonderfully crafted. The music is still my favorite in any movie I've seen. the soundtrack is so friggin good. Radwimps is so amazing. When I listen to one of the tracks, doesn't matter if it has lyrics or not, I can feel that scene instantly.
The story and characters are really what makes or breaks a movie. And I've seen a couple of complaints about this movie in that department, which I can understand to a certain degree. But I don't agree one bit, because while the story might seem convoluted at first glance, it is explaind why and how everything is happening. They just don't spend a lot of time on it, because in the end, it doesn't really matter that much. The why and how isn't important to the story, which is why they don't spend a lot of time explaining everything. I've also seen complaints about the characters being two dimensional, which I can't understand one bit. The side characters all get development and have unique traits. And our two leads definitely have development. They both have strugglesin their lives, both before, during and after the credits roll. They feel human. That is something that we see less and less of in movies today. Characters don't feel human, they feel like characters in a story. Another thing that I love about this movie that I don't think I've mentioned before, is that this world where this all takes place in, feels lived in. It doesn't feel like it was created for this movie. The movie just happens to take place in it. That's also something that we see less and less of in newer movies. It feels like the world is created for the movie. Instead it should be the other way around.
And of course, at last, but definitely not least, the animation. I'm blown away every single time. There's not much to say. Everything from the wide landscape shots to the close detailed shots from inside a house. Everything is just breathtaking. This movie is worth watching just for the animation alone. But thankfully everything else is amazing too.
So overall, Your name is at this point in time my favorite movie of all time. And I really think you should see it if you still haven't. It's just the absolute best.
