Mikael Brønmo Hansen’s review published on Letterboxd:
This is a masterpiece. It's quite literally that simple. A modern day masterpiece. Over the last 9 months, I've seen this eight times now. One would think that i would grow tired of watching the same story over and over again. But quite the opposite is the the truth. It actually moved up two spots for my all time favourite movies, with The Dark Knight being the only movie ahead of it now. That's what keeps surprising me about this. I like it more and more for each time I watch it. And if that's not what you call a masterpiece, I don't know what is.
I know the director has stated many times that he wants people to stop watching the movie, because ge doesn't see it as a finished product, but I can't help myself. It's a movie that I keep thinking about every single day. I hope that one day he'll be able to produce a director's cut that he'll see as a finished product, but until that day I'll keep on watching this for as long as I can.
To say that the animation in this movie is beautiful is a understatement. A lot of animated movies are beautiful. This isn't beautiful. This is art. Every single shot in this movie is a piece of art. You can pause it at any given moment and boom, you have a new wallpaper. That is not an exaggeration.
The music and score is just perfect. The movie knows exactly how to make you feel the emotions you're supposed to feel at every given moment with the music. And it's a real banger soundtrack, that I'm coincidentally listening to as I'm writing this review. And I've been doing it ever since I first watched it. Probably my favourite soundtrack of all time.
But as if that's not enough to make a great movie, what really elevates it is the characters. This story about to people who feel unfulfilled with their lives. They want what the other one has, but when they start living that life they see that everything isn't as easy as they thought it would be. And as the story progress they learn to appreciate each other and become closer than they could ever have dreamed of.
So if you haven't figured it out yet. This is one of my favourite films of all time. I love it so much. I love the visuals, the sound and music and most of all, I love this story and the characters in it.
