Thor: Ragnarok

Thor: Ragnarok ★★★½

The opening makes for a terrific metaphor on the state of the MCU right now. Going through the same motions over and over while restricted by the chains of a set outline. Thor Ragnarok is able to shake the chains off for a while but it still feels constricted as a whole. Fun, colorful, built for the popcorn eater in us all, but at the end of the day it still progresses in a familiar arc.

At this point the biggest issue for me and the MCU is a lack of real stakes, since we are dealing in a very specific formula we always know the heroes will come out on top, especially when the individual hero tales are leading to the larger Avenger films (hard to put a main character in solo danger when we know they must appear later on in the group setting)

Still, largely thanks to the break neck pacing and humor of director Taika Waititi we get the best Thor to date and likely the funniest entry in the MCU as a whole. I just wish the series could break through those chains completely.
