Milez Das’s review published on Letterboxd:
How do you mend your heart after its broken?
As I was feeling every frame and part of this movie, the quote that was going through my mind was this one from the movie Her,
Theodore: Sometimes I think I have felt everything I'm ever gonna feel. And from here on out, I'm not gonna feel anything new. Just lesser versions of what I've already felt.
Chow has felt everything he can with Su Li-zhen, he is still struggling with over the loss of his love. How to forget all this? Is he going to find that love again?
As he parties he way through, meeting new women on a daily basis, having one night stands. He meets Bai Ling with whom he starts to have an casual thing. She dresses like Su Li-zhen. But for Chow he never lets it go far but for Bai, she falls for him.
Each chapter in its own verse, through no order for its well being. Every paint of Red and Green feels through you. At times I felt whenever there was Red, it was In the Mood For Love as Green start to own each frame, it all seemed to falling away from Chow.
As his affair with the landlord's daughter never goes to the point as she never feels the feeling that come at any moment of time. The scene where the landlord mentions about the marriage, Chow's expression tell all.
Everyone who goes to 2046 has the same intention, they want to recapture lost memories. Because in 2046 nothing ever changes. But, nobody knows if that is true or not because no-one has ever come back.
Wong Kar-wai, he knows who to bring my feelings up. I still have every frame of In the mood for Love in mind or Chungking Express's song played on loop or even Happy Together. 2046 feels like everything binding these together. Finally telling how love is, the timing which you got to have. A heart never mends if it has felt pain and loss. There is no medicine for it to go away. It is just you and the battle of pain and sadness.
Chow Mo Wan: Love is all a matter of timing.
Chow Mo Wan: It's no good meeting the right person too soon or too late.
Chow Mo Wan: If I'd lived in another time or place...
Chow Mo Wan: ...my story might have had a very different ending.
2046 is striking in its visual, beautiful in its telling, sadness in its love and each time Chow meets a woman it is still about In the mood for Love and Su Li-zhen.
