Devan’s review published on Letterboxd:
Part of my journey to watch everything in my watchlist in chronological order.
I started this famed, renowned, best picture-winning film and could only think “hey this is the movie Harry and Eggsy reference in Kingsman.”
All that aside, this was way longer than it needed to be. The second act dragged like nothing else. I loved Audrey as the film went on but Eliza’s near-constant wailing in the first half as she learned and Henry’s general air of being arrogant and annoying nonstop throughout was enough to be nearly headache-inducing. Then of course the character of Eliza’s father, which felt wholly unnecessary for the story. But what can you do? Cut out the last minute of this film and I also would’ve felt a lot better but hey, that’s how it goes I guess. I’m glad I’ve finally seen it, but I don’t see myself watching it again. Which is weird really because when it started, I was surprised by how much I was enjoying it. But yeah, it lost me not long after the ball scene, which I do feel is unfortunate.
