Upgrade

Upgrade ★★★

A mixed bag of an action sci-fi movie.

Upgrade sees a man seek revenge after a brutal encounter with a group of thugs, gaining cybernetic powers to help carry out his own personal vendetta.

I quite enjoyed the fact the futuristic world was much more well developed than I expected, with some very pleasing cyberpunk elements, but a significant narrative choice (which I won’t spoil but it involves an AI) just didn’t work for me and as it’s such a critical part of the movie it damped my enjoyment a lot.

There’s some enjoyable action sequences, and the ending is actually quite bold (which was a very nice surprise), but overall pretty humdrum performance from the cast and a plot that mostly didn’t work for him was too much to look past.
