Columbus 2017
“Better get going.”
“I know.”This is an attempt at a better formulation of my thoughts than my first review.
Columbus is quiet. Tenuous like the relationship it hangs around. It’s like a loose collection of memories of a relationship, all these random scenes, the mundane and the messy. It’s a story about love but not a romance (which is always my favourite type of relationship on film so i’m biased).

The Lighthouse 2019
I saw this at FIN Atlantic International Film Festival.
As a kid I loved visiting lighthouses and seeing the lamps. They refract light in such an absorbing way - turning it into little rainbows and distorted shapes. You could stare at them for hours. The lighthouse is like this, in some ways. You just can’t look away.
It is absorbing and relentless. Beautifully, beautifully shot (on 35mm). Every closeup is dripping with gritty detail that you can almost smell it. The shot composition and intense monologues steam roll you through it’s runtime. It’s nasty and vulgar and ridiculous. Kind of a romp!
