emma’s review published on Letterboxd:
the integral imagery of rosie’s shoes was a beautiful and albeit heartbreaking storytelling move on waititi’s behalf. the transition from jojo looking down whilst following the butterfly to the square, who i am choosing to believe was his mother, to the moment he looks up and sees her shoes for the final time is going to stay with me for a while. the immediate recognition that they are hers to the way jojo’s world shatters in an instant to his attempt and failure to tie her laces… i am just wrecked.
the performances delivered by roman griffin davis, scarlett johansson and thomasin mckenzie especially were exceptional and deserving of awards. the direction was perfect. the script and use of satire was something i was not sure would work but does, very well. an exquisite film all around.
