The Holy Mountain

The Holy Mountain ★★★★★

Without a doubt the strangest, most audacious and most absurd film I’ve ever seen. I’m not even sure The Holy Mountain is a film; it’s as much an experience or a stream of conciseness or whatever you want it to be really.

I’m not presumptuous enough to claim I understood this on any meaningful level but I enjoyed it and can certainly appreciate the effort — not just that put in by Jodorowsky and the crew of the film but also by viewers who truly ‘got it’, an undertaking I’m sure requires multiple viewings, research and a not insignificant amount of drugs. For me I am happy to have just conquered it horizontally. There is so much symbolism in every single scene that you end up making some connections even as a casual viewer, such as the deeply spiritual (although not necessarily religious) references and criticism of capitalism, oppressive Latin American governments and the irrationality of war.

Mostly though, my only constantly present thought was “what the fuck?”. You keep thinking it can’t get any stranger after watching things such as a hyper-sexed native brown vampire factory or, for example, a man taking a shit in a jar that proceeds to turn into gold as a pelican struts around and a naked lady plays the cello. It always does. Even if you understand nothing you will enjoy the visuals. Oh the visuals. It’s such an aesthetically fantastic film with excellent costume and set designs. Even the little iguanas have costumes! It’s often extremely disturbing or even repulsive but then it’s always so beautiful and you can’t help but keep your eyes on the screen.

Also features monky and the greatest ending in cinema. I’m giving this 5* as an arbitrary rating but it really could have been anything else I just don’t like leaving films unrated.

Big shoutout to Maria who recommended this to me in the previous previous previous previous previous previous previous previous previous previous previous previous edition of Film Raffle (July 2020) and never lost hope that I will eventually end up seeing it.
