Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again ★★★

This is the worst great movie (or the best bad movie) I’ve seen in a long time. Nothing about it strikes me as particularly great cinematically, but that’s part of its infectious charm. The campiness is intentional, fits the essence of ABBA’s music, and makes the film undeniably fun and a clear improvement on the original (if only by unabashedly turning up the formula to 11). There’s too much wrong with this (some sloppy syncing, Pierce Brosnan singing, etc) to ever make me think this is a “good” movie, but Cher sings “Fernando” to Andy García, so who cares? If I catch this on sometime, I can easily see myself going, “Here we go again.”
