seeing Fundie Fridays in this made me so proud like that is FAM (watch fundie Fridays if you haven’t)

the horror genre has time and time again proven to be a prime landscape for deep explorations of grief - a match made in hell if you will. This is a fine addition to a rich subgenre, but there are definitely many with better acting & writing (outside of Rebecca Hall who is fantastic)

I began to worship what had been. And now I have nothing else. I have no future. I can only look back.

Halle completely carries & elevates this. she is a force of nature - truly a princess personified. her and Eric’s relationship & chemistry was so adorable and joyful, they ate that

wow. just so, so devastatingly romantic. an unabashed ode to the indomitable force of 2 souls choosing each other, through sickness and in health. the chemistry between them was utter perfection. whew this really blew me away 🥹

beau is afraid & polite society would make an excellent and extremely trippy double feature.  mothers obsessed w/ their sons to the point that they are terrifyingly unhinged & villainous; sons becoming emotionally stunted & highly dependent products of that trauma. wild and fascinating!

kelvin harrison jr is a goddamn star. this was already made clear with waves but he just affirms it with every new project he does. Oscar incoming!

Kelly Fremon Craig was such a perfect choice for this. adorable and funny and awkward in all the ways that a truthful account of girlhood should be

visualizes the feeling of an anxiety-fueled nightmare, the ultimate doom-filled spiral of all your worst, irrational fears manifested. I really connect to Ari’s exploration of trauma and the intricacies of mental health in his horror. my thoughts on trauma porn are, because I know it will be discussed here like it is with ari’s prior work: what to one person is dismissible as “trauma porn” is another person’s reality and lived experiences, which will always deserve to be told and listened to.
