Thor: Ragnarok

Thor: Ragnarok ★★★½

This is a colourful crazy cosmic comic book adventure and as such is very entertaining. The only thing that let it down for me is that there is so much humour that it overules any real gravitas, stakes or emotion.

This film is clearly influenced by the success of the Guardians of the Galaxy films and fully embraces the Jack Kirby aesthetic. However both GotG 1 and 2 had emotional, perhaps even tear-jerking, moments when it mattered. That is not the case here - it's a comedy through and through.

Now that's fine, and clearly what they were going for, but if you're going to base a film around an 'End of Days' prophecy you need to have a real sense of threat at certain times and for me that was lacking.

Other than that there's really nothing I disliked and plenty that I enjoyed. It sounds and looks great, with two or three gorgeous moments. I really liked how effortlessly this felt part of the wider MCU with supporting roles, cameos and references all linking to previous films. I also enjoyed how it helped edge us ever closer to Infinity War and further expand the cosmic side of the MCU.

This is a pleasing end to the somwhat strange Thor trilogy, and a film I expect to enjoy more on future rewatches.
