These 70's animal attack films - specifically the sub-set of the type involving insects or creepy-crawlies of some kind - tend to follow a similar path in being unusually dry and self-serious - even if they're actually going right off the deep end of lunacy like in The Swarm - and Bugs is no exception to that general tone.

Where this film pleasantly surprised me, though, was in its bizarro hard sci-fi conceptualisation of these creatures. None of it really…

    4 of 24: A movie with bees.

Part of COVIDEODROME: A Quarantine Challenge

Wow, everyone really hates this movie, huh? I originally figured I couldn't go wrong with Michael Caine fighting killer bees, but I read a bunch of reviews which severely dampened my enthusiasm. To the point where I realised I only had the extended two and a half hour cut, so I desperately tried to find the much shorter theatrical cut, alas to no avail.

    But,…

Much of this film takes place at carnivals and I'm such a sucker for a carnival setting. The whole opening section - our initial disaster in which a pre-cognitive ingenue foils the dastardly plans of Death - concerns a roller coaster this time. It reminded me of one time I went to Phnom Penh in Cambodia, and they used to have an amusement park there with roller coasters and everything, and the sign at the front proclaimed gleefully "THIS ENTIRE…

    Lust for a Female Vampire

Yet another adaptation of Carmilla, the most interesting thing about The Blood Spattered Bride is how it balances a sort of oblique departure from the usual tropes of the basic story with an accentuated foregrounding of the sexual themes which were usually left implied and unstated.

In a striking opening sequence, we see our bride, Susan (Maribel Martín) driving happily off with her groom (Simon Andreu). When he stops briefly at their apartment to dash…

I committed a bit of a faux-pas. A friend of mine said he wanted to have a movie night and he suggested Blade Runner because it's his favourite movie. I'm not going to say no to watching Blade Runner, but I suggested a Philip K Dick double feature, with Total Recall as the B movie. Problem is, I sent him an Outlook calendar invite titled "Dickfest" which triggered an alarm in his work's security software and gave his wife a…

    Lust for a Female Vampire

This movie is often cited as one of Hammer's worst films, even by Hammer fans. Is it just me or is this a reasonably solid effort? It's far from my favourite Hammer film, but it's not particularly bad.

Again, the material being adapted is Sheridan le Fanu's Carmilla which I seem to be writing about incessantly this week. To sleaze things up just a tad, the romance is set in a boarding school for nubile…
