Andrei Rublev 1966
All I can say is that for every moment Anatoly Solonitsyn wasn’t on the screen I found myself longing again for his infinitely touching presence; for his affecting gaze which expresses more suffering than tears, more wisdom than what can be uttered by mouth.

Aftersun 2022
Aftersun is a punishingly beautiful debut, synchronized to perfection in its intricate revelations. Here, Charlotte Wells sews the fabric of memory, the currency of time, the onset of sexual-discovery, the frustrating impossibility of knowing those we’re closest to, the sometimes fruitless search for truth and meaning, and above all our lifelong inquisition into the mystery of our parents. The “Under Pressure” sequence is the strongest I’ve seen in recent memory. I might cry forever.

The Banshees of Inisherin 2022
I’d like to make a note about the mystifying interior of Colm’s seaward cottage and the strong, specific colors Mark Tildesley chose to complement its almost surrealist atmosphere: the bright yellow walls, the red floor made from the “oilskin of an old sailcloth,” the black ceiling from which Colm’s various Chagallian artifacts meticulously hang. The ocular beauty and suggested depth of that space is enough to almost make you forget about the stunning coastal vistas of Ireland which surround it.
