its fine. definitely looks like a netflix series in a bad way, and frankly I'm sick of horror unsubtly 'about trauma', but the acting was pretty great and it was well made. starting the bly manor one now.

(ps. read the shirley jackson book)

  • Collateral

max - the lumpenproletariat - is confronted by cold, brutal, machinistic capital, personified by vincent. dialectics ensue. mann shoots LA in a digital nocturnal haze. the most appropriate casting of tom cruise in any film?

    Bo Burnham: Inside

the first bo burnham thing I've seen outside of youtube clips and... woof. musical comedy already doesn't really do it for me and his whole disingenuous forced sincerity is irritating. being ironic and self-deprecatory about your ego doesn't make you any less narcissistic. the sock puppet epic leftist breadtube bit was excruciating. not funny enough for comedy and not insightful enough for something more personal.

my prediction for all covid-era comedy: will age terribly and be gladly forgotten

    Céline and Julie Go Boating

a fantastical slapstick odyssey haunted by metatextual sirkian melodrama. rivette is a master of suffusing magic into even the most mundane of situations. one of the most interestingly structured films, esp with its use of repetition and rhythm.

unassumingly poignant, delightfully charming, slyly intelligent. a masterpiece.
