”Jonathan, what have you done?”
When I first heard about John Wick I thought it was another one of those throwaway action films that would be a good late night rental and never to be thought of again. Then I sat down and watched it and was blown away. Now three films in, Chad Stahelski’s John Wick trilogy (and hopefully more!) will go down as some of the finest action films ever made.
I think with each entry in the series thus far there’s always a sense of realism to everything. While each entry is “bigger” than the last, it still all fits into a realistic world and I think that’s one of the best parts. Writers Kolstad & Hatten expand on the wonderful world that they’ve build the past three films and I absolutely love what they’ve done here; creating new and interesting ideas and mythology that works wonders.
Of course, it wouldn’t be a John Wick film without fantastic action and choreography. Parabellum continued that streak with just breathtaking visuals and shots that encompass the action sequences and they all fit together so well. That knife fight towards the beginning and the final Hotel fight is fantastic and gets my heart-racing and pumping and I couldn’t get enough of it.
Keanu Reeves is still great as Wick. I feel like he really pushed himself to the max here and it really shows. He is perfect in the role and his dedication is uncanny. Berry & McShane also standout pretty great here too. Chad Stahelski’s John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum will go down as one of the finest action films of the decade with tons of great world building and beautiful cinematography that culminate to a fantastic third outing. Bring on Chapter 4!
