    Romancing the Stone

At one point Danny DeVito has to deliver a line about Tarzan and he puts the emphasis on the second syllable. At that moment, he slipped the barrier between god and man and has been a living deity ever since.

A bit too cutely conceived but Zemeckis directs with suitably adventurous zest and Kathleen Turner is really just wonderful.

  • True Grit

    True Grit

An absolutely beautiful movie all around.

  • Contact

Perfect vehicle for Foster and there's Zemeckis virtuosity out the yin yang, bay-beeeee. Its ambition is matched only by the utter clarity of Zemeckis and co’s storytelling. Absolutely first rate, no doubt Zemeckis's best.

  • Cast Away

    Cast Away

A yuppie miracle play given full-bodied life by Hanks and Zemeckis. The sensibility remains Gumpian, the saintly intervention is a connectedness of all things, especially one another, with tropical winds, time, and tide the only divinity.

  • Richard III

    Richard III

Worth it as a record of Ian McKellen's work alone, but it has quite a bit going for it beyond that including exquisite design and an absolutely breakneck pace.

  • Unstoppable

tony scott sicko mode, rest in power.

  • Spider-Man 2

    Spider-Man 2

Probably the best movie Marvel's ever going to make, in large part because Raimi knows how to harness the thematic and graphic potential of the medium he's adapting better than the largely indistinguishable parade of company man caretakers staffing the Feige regime.

  • Man with the Gun

    Man with the Gun

Sturdy enough, but Mitchum's command of his craft is in full force here. He's the whole show.

  • The Grand Budapest Hotel

    The Grand Budapest Hotel

A real candidate for Anderson's best.

  • Moonrise Kingdom

    Moonrise Kingdom

Becomes more devastating the older I get.

  • Nothing Like a Dame

    Nothing Like a Dame

    hmmmmm... needs Miriam Margolyes.

(before you @ me saying she's not a Dame. shut your mouth she should be.)

  • Double Jeopardy

    Double Jeopardy

i just kept hoping that Tommy Lee Jones's paycheck was large and that he invested it into making his own movies.

even grading on the Dumb Thriller curve, this is an exceedingly dumb thriller.
